Sentimental describes a person who relies on emotions more than reason, or a novel or film that is overly emotional. Derived from the Latin verb, sentire "to feel," sentimental always implies that the emotions are involved a little too much. If you do something for sentimental reasons, you are only doing it because of an emotional attachment.

No and no. Definitely not a synonym. One can be sentimental without being ruled by emotion and emotional without being sentimental..

Merriam-Webster's Dictionary the synonyms for sentimental are: Synonyms chocolate-box, cloying, corny, drippy, fruity, gooey, lovey-dovey, maudlin, mawkish, mushy, novelettish, saccharine, sappy, schmaltzy, sloppy, slushy, soppy, soupy, spoony (or spooney), sticky, sugarcoated, sugary, wet. The definition of sentimental is: 1a: marked or governed by feeling, sensibility, or emotional idealism. NONE OF THE CHOICES ARE A SYNONYM. How did this pass the vetting process??? I reported this question. Maybe other people should do the same leaving this last part out.

"Emotional" is a word with a broad range of meanings, depending on context. While there is an emotional aspect to sentimentality, "sentimental" has a much more specific connotation. As a teacher of English, I would not class them as synonymous. Synonyms have a close relationship and can generally be used as substitutes for each other.
