While Mercury is closer to the sun and gets hotter on the side that faces the sun, about 465 Celsius (about 870 Fahrenheit), the other side of the planet gets very cold, about -184 Celsius (-300 Fahrenheit) so the average is about 166 Celsius (332 Fahrenheit). But Venus, with a thick atmosphere of carbon dioxide, the average is about 460 Celsius (about 860 Fahrenheit). The carbon dioxide creates a strong greenhouse effect which traps a significant portion of the Suns heat. Global warming on an extreme level!
