John Mercer (1909-1976) was an American lyricist, songwriter, and singer, as well as the co-founder of Capitol Records.

Mercer's songs were among the most successful hits of the time, including "Moon River"(1961), "Days of Wine and Roses"(1962), "Autumn Leaves"(1945), and "Hooray for Hollywood"(1937). He wrote the lyrics to more than 1,500 songs and received nineteen Oscar nominations, and won four Best Original Song Oscars.

“Moon River” is a song composed by American composer Henry Mancini (1924-1994) with lyrics by Mercer. It was originally performed by the great female screen legend Audrey Hepburn (1929-1993) in the 1961 film “Breakfast at Tiffany’s”, winning an Academy Award for Best Original Song and the 1962 Grammy Awards for Record of the Year and Song of the Year.

Both also worked on "Days of Wine and Roses", a popular song from the 1962 film of the same name, winning the Academy Award for Best Original Song and the 1964 Grammy Awards for Record of the Year and Song of the Year.

“Autumn Leaves” is the English version of the French song “Les Feuilles Mortes” composed by Hungarian-French composer Joseph Kosma (1905-1969) with lyrics by French poet Jacques Prévert (1900-1977). The English lyrics by Mercer.

"The Green Leaves of Summer" is a song, composed by Russian-American composer Dimitri Tiomkin (1894-1979) with lyrics by American lyricist Paul Webster (1907-1984) and performed by The Brothers Four. It was awarded a Golden Globe Award for Best Original Score.
