Yosemite National Park is in California’s Sierra Nevada mountains. It’s famed for its giant, ancient sequoia trees, and for Tunnel View, the iconic vista of towering Bridalveil Fall and the granite cliffs of El Capitan and Half Dome. In Yosemite Village, there are shops, restaurants, lodging, the Yosemite Museum, and the Ansel Adams Gallery. It has prints of the photographer’s renowned black-and-white landscapes of the area. In addition to all of these items, more than 4 million nature lovers head to this national park annually; many come with their four-legged friends. In Yosemite National Park, visitors know or find out that the only trail which is open to dogs is the 3.6 mile Wawona Meadow Loop.

The Wawona Meadow Loop weaves through the forest surrounding a big meadow at the south end of Yosemite National Park. All of the dogs that are able to use this trail must be kept on leash. Besides the dogs, other animals that can be seen are ones that live around Wawona Meadow. They include free moving black bears, deer, coyotes, weasels, martens, foxes, bobcats, mice, chipmunks, and dozens of species of birds.

Signs along Wawona Meadow Loop deliver information about Wawona Basin’s ecosystems and history. The mostly-shaded trail is extra enjoyable in early summer months when the verdant meadow pops with blooming wildflowers. While the trails in Yosemite National Park prohibit dogs, bikes, and/or horses, the Wawona Meadow Loop welcomes these three, especially smart-heady dogs.
