The American TV Westerns "Cheyenne" (1955–1962), "Maverick" (1957–1962) and "Bronco" (1958–1962) were all produced by William T. Orr (1917– 2002. Orr did not produce the American Western TV series "Gunsmoke". It was produced by Norman Scarth Macdonnell (November 1916 – November 1979), an American producer for radio, television, and several big and small screen feature motion pictures.

"Gunsmoke" is a series that was co-created by Macdonnell with writer John Meston. The series was broadcast on CBS Radio from 1952 to 1961, and on TV from 1955 to 1975. "Gunsmoke" would become "the longest-running prime-time drama series in TV history". Stars on the show include James Arness (Marshal Matt Dillon), Milburn Stone (Doc), Amanda Blake (Miss Kitty Russell), Dennis Weaver (Chester Goode), Burt Reynolds (Quint Asper), Ken Curtis (Festus Haggen), Roger Ewing (Thad Greenwood), and Buck Taylor (Newly O'Brian).

"Gunsmoke" is a series that featured its lead character in each of its 20 seasons; it also aired a total of 635 episodes, and was in the top 10 TV ratings a total number of 13 times, including four consecutive seasons at No. 1. During its second season in 1956, the program joined the list of the top 10 TV programs broadcast in the United States. After it moved to No. 1, it stayed there until 1961. It remained among the top 20 programs until 1964.

In 2013, "TV Guide" ranked "Gunsmoke" as No. 27 on their list of the "60 Best TV Series" to ever air on US television.
