Which of these films made by the Coen Brothers was a box office bomb/failure?
The 1991 film "Barton Fink", a period black comedy psychological thriller film, was written, produced, edited, and directed by the Coen brothers. Set in 1941, the film stars John Turturro in the title role as a young New York City playwright who is hired to write scripts for a film studio in Hollywood, CA. His neighbor, is John Goodman (Charlie Meadows/Karl "Madman" Mundt), an insurance salesman who lives next door at the run-down Hotel Earle.
The Coens wrote the screenplay for "Barton Fink" in three weeks. They began filming "Barton Fink" soon after their film "Miller's Crossing" was finished. This film is one that is influenced by works of several earlier directors, particularly Roman Polanski's "Repulsion" (1965) and "The Tenant" (1976).
"Barton Fink" had its premiere at the Cannes Film Festival in May 1991. In a rare sweep, it won the Palme d'Or as well as awards for Best Director and Best Actor (Turturro). Although the film was a US box office bomb/failure, only grossing $6 million against its $9 million budget, it received positive reviews and was nominated for three Academy Awards.
Three successful box office films by the Coen Brothers (Joel and Ethan) include "Blood Simple" (1984), an American independent neo-noir crime film written, edited, produced, and directed by the Coens; "Raising Arizona" (1987, an American crime comedy film); and "Fargo" (1996, a black comedy crime film). Each film made a good, very good, or substantial amount of money, respectively.
