After decades of entertaining kids on "Sesame Street" and in TV specials and movies such as "Big Bird in China" and "Follow That Bird," Big Bird was honored with a Hollywood Walk of Fame star in 1994, the year of the PBS program's 25th anniversary. His star (located at 7021 Hollywood Boulevard, about a block away from the TCL Chinese Theatre), was the 2,028th star to be dedicated since 1960; as of 2020 there were 2,691 stars.

Fellow "Sesame Street" stars Ruth Buzzi ("Ruthie") and Emilio Delgado ("Luis") attended the 1994 ceremony, as did executive producer Michael Loman and Jim Henson's daughter Cheryl Henson. Big Bird even wore a tie for the occasion.

Big Bird was not the first fictional character to get his own star. That distinction belongs to Disney's Mickey Mouse, who received a star to commemorate his 50th birthday in November 1978. Other animated and made-up personalities with stars include Bugs Bunny, Snow White, Woody Woodpecker, Kermit the Frog, Winnie the Pooh, Snoopy, Minnie Mouse, and the Simpsons.

As of 2020, the Walk of Fame had 2,691 five-pointed terrazzo and brass stars embedded at 6-foot (1.8 m) intervals in the sidewalks along 15 blocks of Hollywood Boulevard and 3 blocks of Vine Street in Hollywood, California. The stars are permanent public monuments to achievement in the entertainment industry, and bear the names of musicians, actors, directors, producers, musical and theatrical groups (as well as fictional characters).
