A budgerigar is a small gregarious Australian parakeet which is green with a yellow head in the wild. The origin of the budgie's name is unclear.

Several possible origins for its name have been proposed. First, it may be a mispronunciation or alteration of the Gamilaraay word "gidjirrigaa". Second is a modification "budgery" or "boojery" (Australian English slang for "good") and "gar" ("cockatoo").

First recorded in 1805, budgerigars are popular pets around the world due to their small size, low cost, and ability to mimic human speech. They are the third most popular pet in the world, after the domesticated dog and cat. Alternative names for the budgerigar include the shell parrot, the warbling grass parakeet, the canary parrot, the zebra parrot, the flight bird, the scallop parrot.

Wild budgerigars average 18 cm long, weigh 30–40 grams, 30 cm in wingspan, and display a light green body color.
