The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is the premier investigation police agency of India. The agency functions under the superintendence of the Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions, Government of India. The agency has been known to investigate several economic crimes, special crimes, cases of corruption and others. CBI is India's officially designated single point of contact for liaison with the Interpol (International Criminal Police Organization) which has 194 member countries.

In 1963, the CBI was established by the Government of India with a view to investigate serious crimes related to defence of India, corruption in high places, the areas of fraud, cheating and embezzlement and social crime, particularly of hoarding, black-marketing and profiteering in essential commodities, having all-India and inter-state ramifications. With the passage of time, CBI started investigations in conventional crimes like assassinations, kidnappings, hijackings, crimes committed by extremists, etc.

The CBI is headed by a Director, an Indian Police Officer (IPS) with a rank of Director General of Police. CBI headquarters is a ₹186 crore ( US$24 million), 11-storey building in New Delhi, housing all branches of the agency. CBI is sometimes criticized due to its excessive political interference irrespective of which political party happens to be in power as it has not been given an independent statutory status.
