First published in 1992, "The Volcano Lover" is a historical novel by the American writer, film-maker, and political activist Susan Sontag (1933-2004).

The titular "Volcano Lover" is Sir William Hamilton (1730-1803) who was, indeed, something of an expert on volcanoes, but is best known as being the husband of Emma Hamilton (1765-1815), who was the mistress of the legendary naval hero Horatio Nelson (1758-1805). This is the main focus of the book, which is set in Naples, with the relevant volcano being Vesuvius.

For many people, the work came as something of a surprise, as Sontag was better known for more experimental and political writings, and although "The Volcano Lover" makes nods towards feminism and intertextuality, it is, essentially, a traditional work of fiction in a traditional genre. The writer John Banville (born 1945) memorably called it "an old fashioned broth of a book", and referenced the legendary historical novelist Walter Scott (1771-1832), famous for such works as "Ivanhoe" and "The Bride of Lammermoor", saying not only would he have enjoyed reading it, but would have been proud to have written it.
