Although Romania borders Bulgaria, Ukraine and Serbia (see the picture) the Romanian language is quite unlike the languages of the other three countries. Bulgarian, Serbian and Ukrainian are all Slavic languages (the same broad language group as Russian). The Romanian language is based on Latin, as are Italian, Spanish and Portuguese. The clue is in the name. Romania was, in the distant past, part of a Roman province (Dacia) from where the Latin cultural connections are derived.
