Jayne Torvill (born 1957) and Christopher Dean (born 1958) are generally regarded as being amongst Britain's greatest ever Winter Olympians, and one of the greatest ice dancing duos in the history of the sport. Although they have performed to other pieces of music, including selections from Bernstein's "West Side Story", and the music they themselves commissioned for the drama "Fire and Ice", they will be forever associated with the music of the "Bolero" composed by Maurice Ravel (1875-1937). Clad dramatically in purple costumes, they skated to this in the Sarajevo Winter Olympics in 1984, and were rewarded with the highest ever marks for both technical and artistic expertise.

Readers may be interested to know that though now seen as iconic, the performance was also controversial. As opposed to pairs skating, ice dancing has strict rules about the performers maintaining physical contact with each other and the height of lifts and jumps. One particular lift certainly pushed the boundaries of the acceptable, but they escaped punishment for it.

After their Olympic careers, they went professional, and also became heavily involved with the TV show "Dancing on Ice", whose best competitors must ultimately perform to the "Bolero", although plainly not to the same standard!
