West Monroe is a separate, distinct city from neighboring Monroe, Louisiana, in the northern part of the state on opposite sides of the Ouachita River, a southeast flowing indirect tributary to the Mississippi River. Both cities are on Interstate 20 (I-20), roughly equidistant from Jackson, Mississippi (MS) & Dallas, Texas.

All the other cities are across state lines from their larger namesakes. East St. Louis is in Illinois; West Memphis is in Arkansas (AR); and East Chicago is in Indiana. The border separating East Chicago, Indiana and Chicago is terrestrial, while the Mississippi River separates East St. Louis from Missouri and West Memphis from Tennessee (TN).

East St. Louis is directly across the Mississippi River from the iconic Gateway Arch monument.

West Memphis is the birthplace of legendary country singer Johnny Cash. Memphis is the heart of the AR-MS-TN tri-state region & boasts Graceland Mansion, the former estate of Elvis Presley, who grew up & graduated high school in Memphis after being born roughly an hour southeast in Tupelo MS.

Depending on what one reads & to whom one talks with, St Louis & Memphis are both considered the birthplace of the 'blues', a country-jazz hybrid music style.
