In Honduras, every July 20, there is the celebration of "El Indio Lempira" (1499 - 1537) in remembrance of this amazing indigenous hero. The currency in Honduras is called the Lempira in honour of him.

He was a chief of the Lenca people who still exist in the Southwestern part of Honduras and El Salvador. It is believed that his real name was Erandique, but he was recognized in the original language of his people as Lempira, that, in Lenca language, 'Lempa' means Lord and 'era' means mountain. His name translates as "Lord of the Mountain".

His existence was documented by the Spanish Antonio de Herrera y Tordesillas. He fought against the Spanish Francisco de Montejo to keep their culture and traditions alive, to have their people free and to keep their territories. In 1537, he was killed in battle and one of the most recent texts found says he was beheaded by one of the colonizers. Still, in many schools around Honduras, the story that is taught is that he was ambushed and killed while seeking a peace treaty with the Spanish forces.

The Panamanian balboa is named in honour of Spanish explorer and conquistador, Vasco Núñez de Balboa. The córdoba is the currency of Nicaragua, created in honour of Francisco Hernández de Córdoba, one of the Spanish explorers who conquered Nicaragua. The currency of Costa Rica is the colón which is named after the Italian Christopher Columbus, known as Cristóbal Colón in Spanish.
