You might be surprised how many gemstones are compounds of aluminium. So, aluminium oxide (a compound of aluminium and oxygen with the chemical formula Al2O3) occurs naturally as the mineral corundum, varieties of which form the precious gemstones ruby and sapphire. The gemstone emerald is a variety of the mineral beryl colored green by trace amounts of chromium and sometimes vanadium; beryl is a mineral composed of beryllium aluminium cyclosilicate with the chemical formula Be3Al2(Si O3)6. However, Amethyst, a violet variety of quartz often used in jewelry, is not a compound of aluminium. Chemically it is Silica (silicon dioxide, SiO2).
