The melody of “He Was Beautiful” was originally written by British composer, Stanley Myers, as a musical piece for the piano, but at the invitation to do so by the British classical guitarist, John Williams, in 1970, Myers re-wrote the music for guitar.

In 1973, Cleo Laine wrote lyrics to the melody known as “Cavatina” and recorded the song "He Was Beautiful" accompanied by Williams in 1976. Two years later the evocative Williams guitar version became the signature theme for Michael Cimino's 1978 film “The Deer Hunter”, for which Stanley Myers won the Ivor Novella Award.

"He Was Beautiful" as a single, failed to make an impact on the British charts. It did, however, meet with success the next year, when released by Iris Williams.
