A blepharoplasty, from two Greek words meaning "eyelid" and "form" involves correcting and/or modifying one or both lower eyelids, and is colloquially sometimes called an "eye lift". Though there are medical reasons for the operation, addressing issues such as excess fat and muscle weakness, it is predominantly used for cosmetic purposes, and overwhelmingly more by women than men.

The term was first used by Karl Ferdinand von Graefe in 1818 to describe the treatment of deformities caused by a cancer, but in the first century AD, the Roman Aulus Cornelius Celsus described a not dissimilar procedure.

The operation is not without risk, and peripheral vision can be affected by it.

Controversially, some Asian women undergo the procedure to give them what they consider a more "friendly" appearance - some would say, more "Western".
