Which river has a Spanish name that means "big river?"

The Río Grande, or Río Bravo del Norte (Furious River of the North), is a river in the United States and Mexico. The name 'Río Grande' means "big river" in Spanish. At 1,896 miles (3,051 km), it is the fifth-longest river in the United States, and among the 20 longest rivers in the world.

The source of the Río Grande is in the San Juan Mountains in Colorado at approximately 12,000 feet (3.6 km) above sea level and slowly descends in elevation until it flows into the Gulf of Mexico. The river flows through the U.S. states of Colorado, New Mexico, and Texas. It also forms the border between Texas and the Mexican states of Chihuahua, Coahuila, Nuevo León, and Tamaulipas.

The Río Grande passes through several cities in the southwestern United States and northern Mexico. Cities include Santa Fe, Albuquerque, Las Cruces and El Paso in the United States, and Matamoros, Ojinaga, and Ciudad Juarez in Mexico.

The United States and Mexico share the water of the Río Grande under a series of agreements administered by the International Boundary and Water Commission (IBWC). The IBWC was established in 1889 to put an end to the dispute over the border between Texas and Mexico. Today, the IBWC allocates river waters between the two nations and provides flood control and water sanitation.
