The obverse and its opposite, reverse, refer to the two sides of the coin or other two-sided objects, including paper money, flags, seals, and medals. The obverse is the front face of the object and the reverse is the back face. The obverse of a coin is commonly called heads because it often depicts the head of a prominent person. If neither side of a coin includes a portrait of a person, the side that bears the name of the country is usually considered the obverse. Outside the field of numismatics, the study or collection of coins, paper currency, and medals, the term front is more commonly used than the term obverse.
