The 1971 film "Carnal Knowledge" opens in the late 1940s with buddies and college roommates Jonathan (Jack Nicholson) and Sandy (singer-turned-actor Art Garfunkel) discussing their ideas about the ideal woman. The movie is one that pointedly focuses upon a guy's view of relationships and sex.

It has a story that chronicles the sexual mores and escapades of two college pals, the loathsome misogynist Jonathan and the shy, neurotic Sandy. The period of time that is covered is just over 20 years. Jonathan and Sandy embody a laundry list of emotional dysfunction as they move from one relationship to the next. Candice Bergen, Rita Moreno, and Oscar-nominated Ann-Margret co-star as the women in their orbit.

This is a film that was very successful; it got excellent film reviews from over 30 critics. At the box office, it was also successful. It grossed just over $12 million US dollars, using a production budget of $5 million that was provided by Joseph E. Levine of which $1 million went to Nichols.
