FC Barcelona, colloquially known as “Barça”, is a Spanish professional football club based in Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain. It is one of three founding members of the Spanish “Primera División” that have never been relegated from the top division of Spanish football since its inception in 1929. The other two clubs are Real Madrid and Athletic Bilbao. These three clubs, along with Osasuna, are the only four professional clubs in Spain that are not sports corporations; instead, they are owned and operated by club members. This, plus the fact that the Catalonian club became a symbol of Catalan culture and Catalanism, gave rise to the Barcelona motto, "Més que un club", in English, "More than a club".

Founded in 1899 FC Barcelona is one of the most valuable and widely supported sports teams in the world, winning a record (as of 2019) 74 domestic trophies and 20 European and worldwide titles. The club has a long-standing rivalry with Real Madrid, and matches between the two teams are referred to as “El Clásico”.

Barcelona players have won a record number of football’s highest awards with recipients including Johan Cruyff, Ronaldo, Romário, Ronaldinho, Rivaldo, Messi, Andrés Iniesta, and Xavi. In November 2018 Barcelona became the first sports team with average first-team pay in excess of £10m ($13.8m) per year.
