As global warming continues to melt elevated icepacks and glaciers throughout the world, settlements close to sea level are seeing increased flooding. Although about half of the states in the USA have a coastal presence, the ones with significant low elevation will see the greatest impacts.

Surprisingly, the state with the lowest average elevation, Delaware, has a mean elevation of only 60 feet or 18.3 meters. The state of Delaware borders Delaware Bay of the Atlantic Ocean. With other borders of the lower parts of Maryland and New Jersey, Delaware has a high elevation of only 447 feet or 36 meters.

By contrast, the mean elevation of Louisiana is 100 feet or 30 meters, and that of Rhode Island is 200 feet or 60 meters. Hawaii, perhaps surprisingly, has a mean elevation of 3030 feet or 920 meters.
