Which Terrier won 'Best in Show' honors at the 143rd Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show in 2019?
This year's 143rd annual Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show hosted 2,800 dogs, consisting of more than 200 different breeds or varieties. The Westminster Kennel Club has the most renowned assortment of canines, demonstrating excellence in breeding and training. It consists of a two-day competition and preliminary activities held in New York City at Piers 92/94 and Madison Square Garden.
The format of the competition is fairly straightforward. Dogs compete within their breed in their specific groups out of Hound, Toy, Terrier, Non-Sporting, Herding, Sporting, and Working, and with each other to determine the best in each group. Then, those dogs compete for the overall Best in Show award.
This year (2019) saw a Wire Fox Terrier named "King" win the honors of Best in Show; his registered name is "King Arthur Van Foliny Home". Last year’s Best in Show was a Bichon Frise in the Non-Sporting group, and before that was a German Shepherd in the Herding group. The Best in Show award is tailored to which dog performs the tasks of their group.
The other 2019 winners are:
Hound: “Burns” the Longhaired Dachshund
Toy: “Bono” the Havanese
Non-Sporting: “Colton” the Schipperke
Herding: “Baby Lars” the Bouvier Des Flandres
Sporting: “Bean” the Sussex Spaniel
Working: “Wilma” the Boxer
