Many people are aware that Canada and the U.S. share the world's longest international border, which stretches some 5,523 miles (8,888 km).

On the opposite end of the spectrum, with the shortest international border, are Botswana and Zambia. These two African countries share a border that's just 0.09 miles (0.15 km) long. The border runs through the Zambezi River; the Kazangulu Ferry makes it possible to cross the border from Botswana to Zambia, and vice versa.

Vatican City, which measures just 0.2 square miles (0.5 km2) total, is entirely bordered by the surrounding country of Italy. Since Vatican City is completely surrounded on all sides, the shared border measures approximately 2 miles (3.2 km), making it the second shortest in the world.

Russia borders more countries than any other nation in the world. A total of 16 countries share borders with Russia. Among those countries is North Korea. Their shared border measures 11.8 miles (19 km).

Liechtenstein is a sovereign nation in Central Europe. The country is so tiny it is ranked sixth on the list of smallest countries in the world. Liechtenstein occupies an area of 61.7 square miles (160 km2). The country’s entire border is 48.4 miles (78 km) long. Of that length, a little over half, 25.5 miles (41 k) is shared with Switzerland.
