Warren Gamaliel Harding (1865-1923) was the 29th president of the U.S. from 1921 until his death in 1923. He was a member of the Republican Party. During his lifetime, he was acclaimed as one of the most popular presidents. Prior to his presidency, he was a member of the state of Ohio’s Senate, then served as the Lieutenant Governor of Ohio, and as a U.S. Senator of Ohio.

After his death however, his legacy and image were tainted due to a number of scandals that came to light. These included his extramarital affair with Nan Britton (1896-1991), an American secretary who was his mistress. Together they had a child named Elizabeth while he was serving in the U.S. Senate, one year before he was elected president. While Elizabeth’s (1919-2005) claim was open to question during her life, in 2015, a DNA test confirmed that Harding was the father.

The other scandal was called the Teapot Dome, a bribery scandal involving Harding’s administration. In summary, it was his Secretary of the Interior, Albert Bacon Fall who had leased Navy petroleum reserves at Teapot Dome in the state of Wyoming, as well as two additional locations in California, to private oil companies at low rates without competitive bidding. The leases were the subject of an investigation resulting in the conviction of Fall, who became the first presidential cabinet member to go the prison.
