Which U.S. beach was the real inspiration for the song 'Kokomo' by the Beach Boys?
Islamorada, a Village of Islands, is a municipality within Monroe County, FL. It now comprises four islands: Plantation Key, Windley Key, Upper Matecumbe and Lower Matecumbe Key. Also, within Islamorada, there are approximately 24 miles of very visible and obviously needed canals.
Islamorada as a village also finds that to some degree it encompass six of the Florida Keys, the ones known especially for their coral reefs. It is a place with all of the following: the Theater of the Sea that features dolphin encounters, exhibits at the History of Diving Museum which include a 16th-century treasure chest, Windley Key Fossil Reef Geological State Park, a former quarry, Lignumvitae Key Botanical State Park, which has a tropical forest, and Indian Key Historic State Park, a tiny island with ruins from the 1800s.
Given the above, the Beach Boys especially John Phillips and Scott McKenzie along with Mike Love and Terry Melcher had no trouble finding true inspiration to create, record, and market the song 'Kokomo'. The Beach Boys on their popular album (Still Cruisin') saw to it that the song "Kokomo" was first released with great fanfare to the public in 1989.
