President Ronald Reagan would draw tens of millions of viewers per address. He gave 29 speeches in all from the Oval Office; the most given by any president. One of Reagan's most remembered speech addressed the Space Shuttle Challenger disaster in 1986.

Richard Nixon ranks second, having given 22 speeches. He even used the office to deliver his resignation speech, which was carried live on radio and television. Nixon stated that he was resigning for the good of the country, and he asked the nation to support President Gerald Ford. Next, he reviewed his accomplishments as president, especially in foreign policy.

In his 2011 announcement of the death of Osama bin Laden, President Obama did not use the Oval Office; he preferred to use the East Room. So, at this point in time, U.S. television networks are increasingly reluctant to sacrifice airtime for solely political purposes. In the U.S. information age, other more convenient media options for public access are available.
