Which Winter Olympic Games were cancelled due to the impacts of World War II?
The Winter Olympic Games, like all Olympic Games, are seen and promoted as an international meet of intense competition that forego nationalism and politics. The Winter Games have been scheduled since 1896. Many people are familiar with high risk events such at the 70m and 90 ski jumps, downhill racing, speed skating, biathlon, bobsledding, and figure skating. These low-friction sports allow high speeds which can lead to significant injuries. For both 1940 and 1944, the winter Olympics were scheduled.
In 1940, the events were scheduled to be held in Tokyo, but the Japanese invasion of China forced the International Olympic Committee to take the hosting away from Japan and give it to Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany. Germany's invasion of Poland in 1939 again forced the IOC to reconsider and the 1940 games were cancelled.
With the hopes that the war would have ended, the 1944 the winter games were cautiously scheduled to be held in Cortina D'Ampezzo, Italy. Alas, the war was still in full battle, so the 1944 games were again called off.
