Wensleydale is the dale (valley) that lies between Swaledale and Bishopdale on the east side of the Pennines in North Yorkshire, England. Wensleydale forms part of the Yorkshire Dales National Park and is named after the small village of Wensley. The name 'Wensley' comes from the words 'Woden's ley', meaning 'meadow of the pagan god Woden'.

The dale is most famous for its cheese. Wensleydale cheese was first made in 1150 by local monks. For many years, the cheese was only sold locally, but in 1897, the first commercial cheese was made. In the 1990s, Wensleydale cheese grew in popularity after the release of the Wallace and Gromit animated cartoon, 'A Grand Day Out'. Wallace is a cheese lover and mentions in the show that Wensleydale is his favourite.

Swaledale, which borders Wensleydale to the north, is one of the northernmost dales. It is known for its Swaledale cheese, but it has never reached the popularity of Wensleydale. The significantly smaller Bishopdale borders Wensleydale to the south. It has an estimated population of 2,500, in comparison to Wensleydale's 4,900.
