Pontius Pilate as the fifth prefect (governor) of the Roman province of Judaea from 26–36 AD serving under Emperor Tiberius. He ordered the trial and crucifixion of Jesus Christ. As governor of Judaea, Pontius Pilate faced a conflict of interests between the Roman Empire and the Sanhedrin Jewish council. When Pontius asked Jesus if he was King of the Jews, he claimed that Jesus embraced the title, which he never did.

According to some historical records, Pilate was ordered back to Rome after harshly suppressing a Samaritan uprising. He arrived just after the death of Tiberius which occurred in March 37 AD. Pilate was replaced in Judaea by Marcellus. Then, in 39 AD, it is believed that Pilate killed himself on orders from Emperor Caligula.
