The concerto in E flat major generally known as "Dumbarton Oaks" is the work of the eminent Russian composer Igor Stravinsky (1882-1971), perhaps best known for his ballets, "The Firebird" and "The Rite of Spring", but also a composer of chamber music.

The piece takes its name from the estate belonging to the American philanthropists and art collectors Robert Woods Bliss and Mildred Barnes Bliss, situated near Washington D.C. and commissioned for their 30th wedding anniversary. The eminent French conductor and music teacher Nadia Boulanger was influential in commissioning the work, and in fact, as Stravinsky was ill, she conducted the first private performance at Dumbarton Oaks itself, though the composer conducted its public premiere. Although it was originally scored for a small chamber orchestra, there are also transcriptions for piano and organ. As a ballet lover himself, Stravinsky may have been pleased that in 1972, a ballet which took the music as its basis was choreographed by Jerome Robbins, perhaps most famous for his work on "West Side Story".
