Theodore von Kàrmàn (11 May 1881 – 6 May 1963) was a Hungarian-American mathematician, aerospace engineer, and physicist who was active primarily in the fields of aeronautics and astronautics. He was responsible for many key advances in aerodynamics, notably on supersonic and hypersonic airflow characterization. He is regarded as an outstanding aerodynamic theoretician of the 20th century.

Theodore von Kàrmàn is known as the father of supersonic flight. He made major contributions to aviation and space technology, aerodynamics, and improved aircraft performance during an illustrious career.

The Kármán line, (the altitude where space begins) is named after Theodore von Kármán. In 1957, he was the first person to attempt to derive such an altitude limit.
