Mel Brooks (Melvin Kaminsky) was born in 1926. He is an American filmmaker, actor, comedian, and composer. Mel served in the US Army from 1944-46 and held the rank of Corporal as a member of the 1104 Engineer Combat Battalion, 78th Infantry Division. He saw action in the Battle of the Bulge.

In his middle age, Brooks became one of the most successful film directors of the 1970s, with many of his films being among the top 10 moneymakers in the year they were released. Multiple awards and acknowledgments are part of his legacy with 3 of his films ranked in the American Film Institute's list of the top 100 comedy films of the past 100 years (1900-2000). They include 'Blazing Saddles' (#6), 'The Producers' (#11) and 'Young Frankenstein' (#13).

Brooks is one of the few people who have received an Oscar (film), an Emmy (television), a Tony (theater), and a Grammy (music).
