Who is this?

Sidney Poitier born February 20, 1927 is a well-known Carribean-American actor, author and director. In 1964, he became the first Bahamian to win an Oscar for best actor, for his work in Lilies of the Field. 38 years later he received an Academy Honorary Award for his contribution in the film industry and accomplishments as a human being. He was married to Juanita Harry from 1950-1965 and had four children.

I met him in the 90's while I was responsible for letting a camera crew in the Federal Courthouse for a day of filming a helicopter fly into downtown and hover over the building across the street and guys rappeling down. The movie was "THE JACKLE". Sydney Poitier was a very nice man and very respectful. My wife at the time was there with me and the only person besides me in the building besides the film crew and some actors. She asked Richard Gere if she could take his picture and he said "maybe later" and walked off. She walked up to Sydney Poitier and asked him and he said "certainly" and struck a pose. He is such a great actor and human being and actors today could learn much from him. On his way out I called him and told him I hoped it was going to be a hell of a movie and he turned, smiled and said " Well we do too".

Spencer Thomas Hancock, I forgot that Sidney Poitier was actually in The Jackal, along with not only Richard Gere, but Bruce Willis as well. Probably the line Sidney is most well-known for is this one from "In the Heat of the Night": "They call me Mister Tibbs." Sidney is 92 years old, as of October 2019.
