The oldest known globe was created more than 2,100 years ago by Greek philosopher and geographer Crates of Mallus, however the oldest globe that survives to this day was made in 1492 by German geographer Martin Behaim. Due to the globe being made prior to Christopher Columbus sailing the New World, it leaves out North America, South America, Australia, and Antarctica. The globe which was named The Erdapfel, is constructed of a laminated linen ball in two halves, reinforced with wood and overlaid with a map painted by George Glockendon. Another interesting fact is Erdapfel is now a German word for potato. At the time Behaim made his globe, potatoes were unknown in Europe.
