Who or what are the Ossetians?
The Ossetians are an Iranian-speaking ethnic group in the Caucasus, numbering approximately 700,000 people.
The majority of Ossetians live in the Republic of North Ossetia-Alania (an administrative unit of the Russian Federation).
In the 2010 census, almost 460,000 people there identified as Ossetians. Following war and emigration, only about 50,000 Ossetians remain in the disputed territory of South Ossetia.
There are also many Ossetians in other parts of Russia. In 2010, their total number in Russia was 528,515, including over 11,000 in Moscow. In Georgia (excluding South Ossetia and Abkhazia), there were also nearly 37,000 Ossetians living in 2002.
The number of Ossetians in Turkey is estimated at approximately 100,000.
