Who played Latka Gravas in the hit TV comedy 'Taxi'?

Andy Kaufman played Latka Gravas. Andrew Geoffrey Kaufman, January 17, 1949 – May 16, 1984, was an American entertainer and performance artist. While often called a "comedian", Kaufman preferred to describe himself instead as a "song and dance man".

As part of his one man shows, he developed a character called .Foreign Man' who had a high pitched, accented voice. This caught the attention of the producer of 'Taxi' and they just rolled the character into the show. He appeared in 79 episodes.

He died of lung cancer and is subject of the song 'Man on the Moon' by R.E.M. Michael Stipe, lead singer and songwriter for the band, was a close friend of Andy and wrote the song as a memorial.
