Who portrayed the character Luca Brasi in the film "The Godfather"?
Luca Brasi is a fictional character in Mario Puzo's 1969 novel "The Godfather", as well as its 1972 film adaptation. In the film, he was portrayed by Lenny Montana, an ex-wrestler and former bodyguard for the Colombo crime family.
Montana (b. Leonardo Passafaro; March 13, 1926 – May 12, 1992) started his career as a professional wrestler. He won the ‘New Jersey Tag Team’ title and then adopted the ring name “Zebra Kid” in the early days of his career. Montana went on to win several professional wrestling titles, such as ‘NWA Texas Tag Team Championship’, the ‘NWA Southern Heavyweight Championship’, and the ‘NWA International Tag Team Championship’. During the course of his wrestling career, Montana became acquainted with the Colombo crime family, an organized crime syndicate in New York City.
Montana worked initially as an arsonist and then as an enforcer for the Colombo family. His tall and athletic figure suited the job. Montana was working as a bodyguard of a few prominent members of the Colombo family, when he was offered a role in "The Godfather". Al Ruddy, the producer of the movie, was impressed with his gigantic looks and decided to cast him. Following the success of the movie, Montana acted in several other movies. He was mostly offered roles of gangsters or mobsters. "Blood Song" (1982) was his last movie. Montana died of a heart attack at the age of 66.
