Robin Williams was born in Chicago, Illinois on July 21, 1951. His father Robert Fitzgerald Williams worked for Ford Motor Company. His mother Laura McLaurin was a former model from New Orleans, Louisiana. Williams' ancestors were English, Welsh, Irish, Scottish, German, and French.

Williams became famous for his role as 'Mork' in the television comedy series 'Mork & Mindy' (1978–1982). While his career was taking off, Williams faced many personal challenges. He developed a drug and alcohol problem while working on the sitcom Mork and Mindy, and would struggle with addiction for more than two decades.

Williams went on to a successful career in both stand-up comedy and movie acting. He acted in the movies such as 'The World According to Garp', 'Good Morning, Vietnam', 'Dead Poets Society', 'Awakenings', 'Good Will Hunting', 'Hook', 'Mrs. Doubtfire', 'Jumanji', 'The Birdcage, 'Night at the Museum', and 'Happy Feet'.

Among many illustrious awards he received, Williams was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actor three times. He received the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his performance in 'Good Will Hunting'.

Among Williams' many quotes, he said, "You are only given one little spark of madness. You mustn’t lose it.” This meant that you must not lose what makes you unique.

Williams lived in San Francisco and Paradise Cay in California. On August 11, 2014, Williams died of an apparent suicide while suffering several severe health issues.
