Jake Sully is the main protagonist of the science fiction film 'Avatar' (2009) and the subsequent films in the series. Sully is played by Sam Worthington (born 1976), an English-Australian actor. The director, James Cameron, cast up-and-coming young actors to keep the budget down.

Sully is a disabled former Marine who joins the Avatar Program to replace his twin brother who has been killed. The program intends to mine a valuable mineral called unobtanium on a planet known as Pandora. Sully begins as a bodyguard, but unexpectedly, gains the trust of a Na'vi tribe that inhabits the planet. Sully decides to change his allegiance, and leads the natives to fight and win against the humans for survival.

During the film, Sully replaces his paraplegic human body with a synthetic Avatar made of carbon fibre. He is the first human to permanently crossover from human form to Na'vi form.

When Worthington auditioned for the part, he was living in his car. After getting the role, Worthington managed to find somewhere to live. Cameron chose Worthington because he had not done a major film before, so would give the character "a quality that is really real". Cameron said Worthington had "that quality of being a guy you'd want to have a beer with, and he ultimately becomes a leader who transforms the world".
