Who was Dixy Lee Ray?
Dixy Lee Ray was an outspoken scientist who also served as the 17th Governor of the U.S. state of Washington, and formerly as Chairman of the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission.
Variously described as idiosyncratic, and "ridiculously smart," she was the state's first female governor and was known for her leadership during the devastating eruption of Mt. St. Helens, and for strident support of atomic energy. She was also known for her personal eccentricities and a loyal group of her no less eccentric friends.

And speaker in later years, we’ll known at the time for with meticulous research on at the time “global cooling” and the coming ice age , nitrogen and green house gases( not a common term at the time) and the fact that one plankton bloom in the Sargasso Sea produces more oxygen than all trees and plants combined. She was a Democrat that broke many glass ceilings and combined common sense, intelligence and Did not suffer fools . A departure from today’s politicians and a hoot to boot.

Ross Shoemaker, And one wonders what would happen if all the world's plankton were to disappear, not just from the Sargasso. Hate to think about it. As far as greenhouse gases not being common. Probably quite so with the masses, but not with any students of meteorology/climatology at the time.
