Who was Hidenoyama Raigorō?
Hidenoyama Raigorō, born Tatsugoro Kikuta in 1808, was a prominent sumo wrestler who became the 9th yokozuna, the highest rank in sumo wrestling. Despite his small stature, he was a formidable competitor, known by several names including Amatsukaze Kumoemon and Iwamigata Jōemon.
Initially overlooked due to his height of just 1.51 meters, Hidenoyama joined the Hidenoyama stable in 1827 and made his debut in 1828. He quickly rose through the ranks, entering the top makuuchi division by 1837. His impressive record included 30 consecutive victories and the equivalent of six tournament wins before the modern yūshō system was established. In the makuuchi division, he achieved 112 wins against only 21 losses, boasting a winning percentage of 84.2%.
In November 1847, Hidenoyama was awarded the prestigious yokozuna title. Although his height of 1.64 meters was considered short for a yokozuna, his influence and skill earned him this honor. It is said that the ōzeki Tsurugizan Taniemon recommended him for the title, highlighting his significant impact on the sumo world.
