Olive Oatman was born on September 7th 1837 in Illinois to Royce and Mary Ann Oatman. She was one of their seven children. At the age of fourteen, while accompanying her family to California in search of a better life, they came upon a group of Native Americans known as the Yavapais. The Yavapais had asked for food and tobacco, but the Oatman's' supplies were running low and they didn't have any to spare. The Yavapais attacked, killing everyone except her and two other siblings. Her sister Mary Ann and she were taken prisoner while her brother was left for dead.

Sometime later the Yavapais traded the two girls to the Mohave Indians. While with the Mohave they were treated well, little else is clear about her time there due to conflicting stories. This is when she got the tattoo on her chin for reasons unknown. Her sister died of starvation somewhere around the age of eleven, four years into their captivity. Her brother Lorenzo, who had survived the attack, discovered where she was. At the age of nineteen, she was released with the help of the U.S. Government.

She passed away on March 30th 1903 from a heart attack.
