Who was the first sportsman, actor and politician nominated to the Indian Upper House of Parliament?
Dara Singh Randhawa ( 19 November 1928 - 12 July 2012), popularly known as Dara Singh, was an Indian professional wrestler, actor and politician. He started acting as a stunt hero in 1952 in Indian films and was the first sportsman to be nominated to the Rajya Sabha (upper house of Indian Parliament) on September 18, 2003. He worked in Hindi and Punjabi films as film producer, director and writer, and he acted in films and television. He was a stunt film actor for many years and played his first lead role in the film "King Kong" (1962). He starred as Bhima in various Mahabharata (Indian epic) movies and has also starred as Lord Shiva ( Indian god ) in various mythological movies.
He is known for his undefeated worldwide streak in wrestling and later being a successful movie star. His role of Hanuman (Indian god) in the film "Bajrangbali" (1976) and in TV serial "Ramayan", made him popular. As an adult, he was 6 feet 2 inches (1.88 m) tall, weighed 127 kilograms (280 lb) and had a chest measurement of 53 inches (130cm). During his wrestling career, he competed around the world with opponents such as Bill Verna, Firpo Zbyszko, John Da Silva, Rikidozan, Danny Lynch. His act of flooring King Kong, the Hungarian wrestler, is always remembered.
