Hannibal Hamlin (born August 27, 1809 – died July 4, 1891) was the 15th Vice President of the United States (1861–65), serving under President Abraham Lincoln during the American Civil War. He was the first Vice President from the Republican Party. He would be replaced by Andrew Johnson in Lincoln's second term.
Prior to his election in 1860, Hamlin served in the United States Senate, the House of Representatives, and as the 26th Governor of Maine.

Lincoln changed from Hamlin to Johnson because he wanted to telegraph a clear message of national unity and reconciliation since it was obvious to him that this wails be essential. John Wilkes Booth didn’t get the message...or ignored it.
