Who was "The Man Without a Country"?

"The Man Without a Country" is a story by Edward Everett Hale, an American prosaic. The story narrates about a lieutenant of the US Army under the mane of Philip Nolan. According to the story plot Philip's close friend Aaron Burr was accused of treachery around 1863. At the trial of his friend, Nolan avowed that he hoped he would never hear the words "the United States of America" again. He was thus doomed to live a secluded life on board a ship amidst the sea and he was never allowed to see, read or hear anything related to "America" again! Critics suppose that though the events of the story take place in the 19th century, this is a pure allegory of American Civil War upheaval.
