Who were the first climbers to have reached the summit of Mount Everest?
Sir Edmund Percival Hillary (20 July 1919 – 11 January 2008) was a New Zealand mountaineer, explorer and philanthropist. On 29 May 1953, Hillary and Nepalese Sherpa mountaineer Tenzing Norgay became the first climbers to reach the summit of Mount Everest.

Got it. My daughter's Nana was his secretary. She is still alive in Kiwi Land at 96. We visited the Southern Island 'Alps' where he used to climb. May he RIP.

Or possibly Mallory and Irving, in 1924. Mallory's body was found close to the summit in 1999, Irving is still missing. Were they on the way up, or on the way down when disaster struck?

It is important to remember Hillary would not have gotten there without Sherpa Tenzing Norgay.

Carole Cottrell - yes, I like that. Mallory carried a photo of his wife, which he promised he would leave on the summit. The well - preserved body had no photo in the clothing. The plot thickens!

Hillary's success was announced on the Coranation day in 1953. A real feel good factor released on a day of great public celebration.

When I was a schoolboy in the early nineteen sixties, we were lucky enough to have Tenzing Norgay come and speak to the assembled school.

In the foreword of "The Sword Woman" by Robert E Howard, there's a claim that two 98 pound Asian women were the first two climb Mt Everest. Does anyone know if this claim is accurate.

Sir Edmund Hilary was a Farmer and a Bee Keeper. He also help Sherpa's village by starting a charity trust to help the Nepelese people. He has done a lot and his son, I believe is carrying on with what his Father started.

Evans and Boudillon were very unlucky.Missed out the day before Hillary and Tenzing because of a failure in Evans b/a. Harry Ayres was a great mountaineer, recognised as the best NZ mountaineer (including Ed Hillary)
