In 2021, the 19-year-old tennis player Emma Raducanu won the BBC Sports Personality Award, with diver Tom Daley coming second, and swimmer Adam Peaty in third. Raducanu was born in Toronto but raised in London. With a wildcard entry, she made her debut at Wimbledon in 2021, just two months after completing her final year of school. Raducanu reached the fourth round at Wimbledon before pulling out of the competition.

Following her Wimbledon debut, Raducanu won the US Open, beating Leylah Fernandez in the final. This made her the first British woman to win a Grand Slam singles title since Virginia Wade in 1977.

Due to testing positive with Covid-19, Raducanu could not attend the British Sports Personality of the Year ceremony held on Sunday 19th December 2021.
