'H is for Hawk' is a 2014 memoir by British writer and naturalist Helen Macdonald (born 1970). It won the Samuel Johnson Prize, Costa Book of the Year award, and 'Prix du Meilleur Livre Étranger' (Best Foreign Book Prize), as well as being nominated for other book awards.

Macdonald narrates the story of a year she spent training a northern goshawk. She was also grieving the death of her father, Alisdair Macdonald, a photojournalist, who died suddenly of a heart attack in 2007. Her father had once been a falconer, so Macdonald purchased the young bird to help her through the grieving process.

'H is for Hawk' is Macdonald's third book. She previously published a book of poetry called 'Shaler's Fish' (2001) and 'Falcon' (2006), in which she discusses the lives of the titular birds. She has since published her second memoir, 'Vesper Flights' (2020).

As well as books, Macdonald has written and narrated several radio programmes. She also starred in the British documentary series, 'Birds Britannia' in 2010, and 'The Hidden Wilds of the Motorway' in 2020.
