Why were Film Scores Originally Introduced?

The motivation for the introduction of movie theater sound systems was a practical one. Early projectors were very loud and because there was little acoustic-dampening between the projection booth and the theater proper, the patrons could clearly hear the noise of the projector.

a pianist was often employed to play the incidental music (eg Charlie Chaplin films) which muffled the projector noises, an aunt of mine played at the local cinema when she was a young lady.

My mom played piano at the local movie house while in high school. Rather, she pumped the pedals on the player piano. Occasionally, she'd nod off & raise the ire of the theater owner.
